Our sedation services are led by our Consultant Anaesthetist, Professor Kariem El-Boghdadly, providing patients with the highest standards of safety, comfort and clinical care.
We offer both intravenous (IV) sedation and inhalation sedation, carefully tailored to your individual needs and the complexity of your treatment.
Before your treatment, you'll attend a consultation where we'll discuss your treatment, explain the different types of sedation available and determine which option is most appropriate for you. This is also an opportunity to ask any questions and understand exactly what to expect on the day of your procedure.
Our team will guide you through every stage of the process, ensuring you feel informed, comfortable and confident before, during and after your treatment.
Administered through a small cannula in your arm, IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, helping you feel calm, comfortable and at ease throughout your treatment.
Using a gentle blend of nitrous oxide and oxygen, inhalation sedation helps you feel calm and relaxed while remaining awake, responsive and comfortable throughout your treatment.
• IV sedation helps you feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment, while remaining conscious and able to respond to instructions.
• The sedative is administered gradually through a small cannula in your hand or arm, with the effects usually felt within a few minutes.
• You must be accompanied by a responsible adult escort, who must remain with you and support you for 24 hours following your appointment.
• You may have a light meal up to two hours before treatment, and should continue taking your regular medication unless advised otherwise.• You should avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after your appointment and wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up.
• Following treatment, you must not drive, operate machinery, sign legal documents or make important decisions for 24 hours.
• You should travel home by car or taxi with your escort and rest at home for the remainder of the day.
• Our team will provide detailed post-operative instructions and be available should you have any concerns during your recovery.
• A small, comfortable nosepiece will be placed over your nose. You'll breathe normally while a carefully controlled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is introduced, helping you feel calm and relaxed within a few minutes.
• You’ll remain awake, aware and able to communicate with our team throughout your procedure. Most patients feel relaxed, comfortable and less anxious, making treatment much easier while remaining in control at all times.
• At the end of your treatment, you'll breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help the effects wear off. Recovery is usually very quick, and most patients can leave shortly afterwards and return to their normal daily activities, unless advised otherwise by your clinician.
