NHS Referral Requirements & Clinical Guidance
To ensure efficient triage and safe patient management, please include the following information with your referral
Radiographs
- Radiographs must be provided for all extraction referrals
- OPG preferred for lower third molars
- PA's should be provided
- Imaging Incomplete
- To ensure safe and effective assessment, please include an appropriate radiograph with your referral. If imaging is not available, kindly provide the clinical reasoning.
- - Where necessary, we will request additional imaging, as we only undertake radiographic exposure when clinically indicated.
Anticoagulants
- Provide full medication details
- Include dosage, indication and duration
- List Item
- Patients who take Warfarin
- Patients taking warfarin should be advised that an INR reading will be required within 24 hours prior to treatment.
- INR should be <4.0
- Within the patient’s therapeutic range.
Orthodontic XLA
- Orthodontist's treatment letter required
- Radiographs required
- Specify surgical requirement (e.g. expose & bond)
- A radiograph and treatment plan should accompany all referrals. If either is missing, we may be unable to proceed until the relevant information is provided.
Soft Tissue Surgery
- Clinical photographs facilitate appropriate triage
- Non-suspicious lesions only
- For excisional biopsies, we will provide appropriate histology reporting
- Suspected malignancy must be referred via the 2WW pathway
Bisphosphonates
- Most patients can be treated in Primary care as risk is multifactorial - we will assess cases on an individual basis and manage appropriately
- Include duration, route of administration and date of last dose if IV
- We can facilitate an onward referral if required in elevated risk cases
- Provide full medical history including any adjuvant therapies
- Elevated Risk – Secondary Care Recommended
- Patients may be better managed in secondary care where any of the following apply:
- More than six IV doses of bisphosphonates
- Parenteral BMAs for active systemic treatment of:
- - Metastatic cancer
- - Haematological malignancy
- - History of, or established, MRONJ
